Dubai: A 40-member group comprising 38 Indians working in a Qatar-based hypermarket chain has won 10 million dirhams (USD 2.72 million) in a lucky draw in the United Arab Emirates, according to a media report on Monday.

According to the Khaleej Times report, the winning ticket was bought in the name of Indian expat Naheel Nizamuddin in Abu Dhabi’s Big Ticket lottery.

Nizamuddin, who hails from Kerala, could not reach since Sunday evening and lottery organizers had to contact his parents in India to inform him about the mega prize.

In the lottery application, he had given his Indian number which was not active.

However, he had also given an alternate number of his parents, from which the organizers contacted him.

The prize will be shared by another 39 winners, of whom 37 are Indians (all from Kerala) and the other two are from Bangladesh.

All of them are employees of Qatar-based hypermarket chain Al Suwaid Group.

The news of victory is yet to come.

“We usually get a lot of spam calls. I still can’t believe we have won,” Naheel told the newspaper.

We all belong to middle class families and are facing financial crunch. Therefore, the future of 40 families is secured with this jackpot,” said one of the winners and roommate of Nizamdin, Shenoy Othayoth Kizhak.

Shenoy said that this is the first time that 40 people have bought tickets.

??Usually 10 to 15 people buy tickets. Since we had not been winning for the last few years, we increased our group to 40. You never know who is lucky, ?? Shenoy said on the phone.
