New Delhi: West Bengal BJP leader Rajiv Banerjee returns to TMC during a rally in Tripura on Sunday (October 31, 2021). He officially joined the party at around 2 pm during TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s rally in Agartala.
Rajiv said he “repents” of joining the BJP ahead of the state assembly elections, despite the West Bengal chief minister asking him not to leave the TMC. “I am sorry and now remorseful. I will work under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee,” PTI quoted him as saying.
The former minister in Mamata Banerjee’s government was named a member of the BJP’s National Executive Committee and contested the assembly elections from Domjur in Howrah district. He lost to TMC’s Kalyan Ghosh by over 42,000 votes.
“I realized that I cannot accept the politics of hatred and divisive ideology promoted by the BJP. I cannot accept the anti-people policies of the BJP. I often gave my opinion to the BJP leadership and made personal attacks and defamation on Mamata Banerjee. There was criticism. But no one listened,” he said according to a PTI report.
Notably, Rajiv was absent from BJP events since the election results were announced on May 2, and has often publicly criticized the BJP leadership.
