An Army officer and four other jawans were killed in action during an encounter between security forces and terrorists during an anti-insurgency operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Monday.
He said the operation was launched in a village near Dera Ki Gali in Surankot in the early hours after receiving intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists.
The hiding terrorists opened heavy fire on the search parties, resulting in heavy fire and serious injuries to a Junior Commissioned Officer or JCO and four other soldiers. He died of his injuries.
A defense spokesperson said the encounter with the terrorists is on and detailed information is awaited.
Officials said there were reports about the presence of a group of heavily armed terrorists in the Chamerer forest, after they managed to sneak in from across the Line of Control (LoC).
He said that security forces have been sent to the area to block all the escape routes of the terrorists.
