Asian TT Championship: Men’s singles quarterfinals top Indian, Sharath

Top-ranked Indian table tennis player, A Sharath Kamal reached the final after beating Mohammad Abdulwahab 8-11, 10-12, 6-11 in the quarter-finals of the Asian TT Championship at the Lusail Sports Arena in Doha, Qatar on Sunday.

World number 33 Sharath will face world number 22 Lee Sangsu of Korea later in the semi-finals.

Earlier in the Round of 16, the three-Olympic legend defeated Zahlil Zokhiri of Tajikistan and, in the Round of 32, 38-year-old Mohammadli Ruintanesfahani of Iran 10-12, 7-11, 7-11.

Another Indian, Gnanasekaran Sathiyan, who reached the pre-quarterfinals, lost 9-11, 11-6, 6-11, 9-11 to Kazuhiro Yoshimura of Japan.

Apart from this, Sharath along with his Chennai city partner Sathiyan also entered the men’s doubles semi-final along with another Indian pair of Manav Thakkar and Harmeet Desai.

Manav and Harmeet beat the troubled world No. 17 pair of Iran’s Alamian brothers Noshad and Nima, No. 17, 12-10, 11-5, 11-6 in the quarter-finals and face the top on Monday. The seeds will be from Korea’s Woojin Jung and Jeongoon Lim.

Meanwhile, Sharath and Sathiyan will take on Yukiya Uda and Shunsuke Togami of Japan in a battle for a place in the finals. In the quarterfinals, the Indian pair defeated Zhe Yu Clarence Chew and Kun Ting Beh of Singapore 11-9, 11-7, 12-10.

By reaching the semi-finals in doubles events, India’s doubles teams are assured a bronze medal.

India’s men won the bronze medal in the team events that ended on Friday.
