Astronaut gets special ice cream delivery on 50th birthday

A space station astronaut is celebrating his 50th birthday with the coolest gift ever – a supply ship carrying ice cream and other treats.

SpaceX’s latest cargo delivery appeared on Monday at the International Space Station after a day-long transit. The automatic docking was overseen by NASA astronaut Megan MacArthur.

“No one has sent me a spacecraft for my birthday before. I appreciate it,” he radioed as the capsule arrived.

Launched Sunday from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, the capsule contains lemons, cherry tomatoes, avocados and ice cream as well as a few tons of research and other gear for MacArthur and his six crewmembers.

The shipment came just days before the first three spacewalks.

Starting Friday, the two Russians on board will perform back-to-back spacewalks to prepare for a new laboratory that will arrive in July.

Then a Japanese-French spacewalking pair will venture on Sept. 12 to install a bracket for the new solar panels that will arrive next year. This NASA-guided spacewalk was supposed to take place last week, but was postponed after American astronaut Mark Vande Hei suffered a pinched nerve in his neck. Station managers opted to replace him with French astronaut Thomas Pesquet.
