Thane: Police have seized banned imported cigarettes worth Rs 54.31 lakh and arrested a person in Ulhasnagar town of Thane district of Maharashtra.
Acting on a tip-off, police on Thursday raided a general store in the town and seized a stock of banned cigarettes, Krishna Kokani, senior inspector of Crime Branch Unit 1, of the city police, said.
He said that the police have arrested the owner of the shop Jitendra alias Jhonni Makhija and also raided a godown where he had kept the banned product.
Besides imported cigarettes, the accused also stocked Indian cigarettes, which did not have any statutory warning label, the official said, adding that the seized stock was manufactured in Korea, Switzerland, Indonesia and London.
A case under relevant sections of the IPC and COPTA Act has been registered against the arrested accused at the Central Police Station in Ulhasnagar zone, the official said.
