Lucknow: Attacking the Uttar Pradesh government over the investigation into the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday alleged that it was giving “bouquets” to the culprits instead of punishing them.
The opposition leader’s remarks came hours after Union Minister of State Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case.
Ashish Mishra was supposed to appear before the police on Friday, but he did not do so.
After this, the Uttar Pradesh Police issued a new notice asking him to appear on Saturday by 11 am.
Talking to reporters here, Akhilesh Yadav alleged, “The way farmers were crushed, now laws are being crushed. This government has crushed the Constitution.
“You have seen how a vehicle ran over farmers fighting for their rights. The guilty are yet to be nabbed. Instead of summoning, a bouquet of flowers is being given. The summons is in name only, and (actually) ‘Samman’ (respect) is given.”
The former UP chief minister said that the local intelligence unit and officials, including the administration, should be aware that such an incident could happen.
Despite this, farmers died, he said.
He again demanded the resignation of Ajay Mishra from the Union Council of Ministers, accusing the UP government of saving the culprits.
“MoS had said that he was an MP, MLA, but he was also something else and was threatening farmers.
“The government claims that it is a ‘strong government’. Is the government only for the powerful and not for the farmers? “In times to come, the BJP will be wiped out,” he warned.
The family members of the victims want justice and punishment for the culprits.
“The law of the land is being crushed under the tyres of the jeep,” he said.
