Boxing World Championship: Akash Sangwan wins opening bout

Indian boxer Akash Sangwan (67kg) entered the second round of the AIBA Men’s World Championships with a comprehensive 5-0 win over Turkey’s Furkan Adem in his opening bout.

Defending national champion Sangwan will next face Germany’s Daniel Kröter, who got a bye in the first round. In the one-sided match that took place late last night, the Indian dominated Adams.

Earlier, another debutant Rohit Mor (57kg) gave India a winning start by beating Ecuador’s Jean Cassado 5-0 in a confident opening round performance this evening. Next up for him is Alan Rahimik of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Asian champion Sanjeet (92kg) got a first round bye along with Sachin Kumar (80kg).

Sachin will face American Robbie Gonzalez in the second round on October 30, while Sanjeet will take on Andre Stotsky of Russia in his opening match on October 29.

With over 600 boxers from over 100 countries in the fray, many competitors must win at least three bouts in some categories to reach the quarter-final stage.

Five-time Asian medalist Shiv Thapa (63.5kg) is one such boxer.

Thapa, who won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Showpiece, will open his campaign against Kenya’s Victor Odhiambo Nyadera on the day.

Asian silver medalist Deepak Kumar (51kg), who impressed with his mammoth performance on his way to win a silver medal at the prestigious Strandja Memorial tournament last year, will square off against Kyrgyzstan’s Azat Usnaliev.

Sumit (75kg) will compete with Thapa and Deepak on the day they take on Jamaica’s Damon O’Neill.

Also in action will be Narendra (+92kg), who will be up against Poland’s Oscar Safarian.

The gold winners in the showpiece will walk away with prize money of USD 100,000.

USD 50,000 is to be given to the silver medalists, and USD 25,000 will be awarded to both the bronze medalists. The total prize money is USD 2.6 million.
