On Tuesday, police arrested two people, including former Phoolan legislator Devendra Kanhar, on charges of assault and robbery, an official said.
The official said that the other person arrested along with Kahar was identified as Srinivas Kahar, a former constable of Odisha Police.
Mahendranath Murmu said, “The former MLA and another person were arrested under various sections of the IPC based on a complaint made by a resident of Dhenkanal district.”
Police said the incident occurred on 11 February. Kanhar and his accomplice attacked a tourist group, who came to the Kataramal Falls near Phulbani town, after police said they robbed them as well.
Devendra Kanhar was elected to the assembly in 2009 from Phulbani constituency on a BJD ticket. He was denied BJD ticket in the 2019 election.
