The issue came up before Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan, when he inaugurated “Samman” – a fortnightly public awareness campaign about crimes against women – calling for a national debate on raising the minimum age of marriage.

Currently women are allowed to marry at the age of 18, three years before the minimum age limit of 21 years for men. The Chief Minister had said that the minimum age for women should also be 21 years.

Saying that women are capable of reproduction at the age of 15, Mr. Verma said, “This is not my discovery. According to the report of doctors, girls are suitable to have children at the age of 15.
