Mumbai journalist gets protection in Delhi rape case

The Delhi High Court listed the case for further hearing on 16 April.

New Delhi:

The Delhi High Court granted interim protection from arrest to a Mumbai-based television journalist in a rape case today, provided he is involved in a police investigation.

Justice Mukta Gupta issued notice and sought reply from Delhi Police and the complainant woman on the plea of journalist Varun Hiremath seeking anticipatory bail in the case.

The High Court said, “The petitioner cannot be arrested until the next date of hearing, when he is involved in the investigation.”

It listed the case for further hearing on 16 April.

Varun Hiremath has approached the High Court after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a Delhi trial court in March.

According to the news agency Press Trust of India, the 22-year-old woman alleged in her complaint that she was raped by Hiremath on February 20 at a five-star hotel in Chanakyapuri, Delhi.

The 28-year-old’s lawyer claimed before the court that there had been a history of past sexual relations between the accused and the complainant.
