Center announces Rs 1,300 crore package for Northeast to tackle COVID-19


GUWAHATI: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday announced that the Center will provide a financial package of Rs 1,300 crore to the northeastern states to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reviewing the COVID-19 situation with health ministers of all northeastern states in Guwahati, Mandaviya said that there is a need to procure medicines, increase oxygen supply, increase beds in local and district level hospitals – general, ICU and children. Funds are being made available for .

“This fund will also be used by the states in the region to intensify the vaccination campaign. The Government of India is committed to providing adequate vaccines to the states,” he told a press conference after the review meeting.

On the long second wave of the pandemic in the Northeast, the minister said the peak in the region was observed much later than the rest of India and hence it was taking time to subside.

“In the last two weeks, cases have started declining in the Northeast and that is a good sign.

All the states took several steps to prevent the second wave and it is coming to an end now.”
