CHANDIGARH: In view of farmers’ agitation in Karnal, the Haryana government on Thursday suspended internet and SMS services in the district to “prevent any disturbance of peace and public order”.

According to a statement issued by the state home affairs department, the services will remain suspended from 7 am to 11.59 pm to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumors through various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter. On mobile phones and SMS etc. for facilitating and mobilizing crowds of agitators and protesters who may cause serious damage to public and private properties by indulging in arson or sabotage and other types of violent activities.

Meanwhile, internet and SMS services were disrupted in Karnal since Monday in view of the gherao of the mini secretariat in the district and the mahapanchayat in protest against the lathi-charge against farmers on August 28.

The farmers continued their protest outside the secretariat after talks with the district administration failed on their call for action against the officials involved in the lathi charge.

A Kisan Mahapanchayat was also organized by the Center in Muzaffarnagar on Sunday against the three agricultural laws. It announced that they would campaign against the BJP in the upcoming assembly elections and the mahapanchayat saw the participation of various political parties.

Farmers have been protesting at various borders of the national capital since November 26 last year against the three newly enacted agriculture laws. Farmer leaders and the Center have held several rounds of talks but the impasse remains.
