Farmers stop agitation in UP after promise of compensation

Farmers protesting against yesterday’s death in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh have agreed with the government and called off their dharna.

The government has promised a compensation of Rs 45 lakh to the families of those who died. A compensation of Rs 10 lakh will be given to the injured.

After a meeting with the police this morning, farmers agreed to cremate the bodies of four people who were allegedly crushed by a car carrying Union Minister Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son. Four farmers were killed and many others were injured in this attack.

A case of murder has been registered against Ajay Kumar Mishra’s son Ashish Mishra. The police today assured the farmers that an inquiry would be conducted on the basis of the complaint of the relatives of the deceased.
