Geomagnetic storm alert: Solar flare could hit Earth directly today, disrupting power grids

The US agency National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Alert with a solar flare due to hit Earth directly on October 11, 2021.

According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), the resulting geomagnetic storm will disrupt power grids in high-latitude areas where exposures will be greater.

A solar flare is what scientists call a coronal mass ejection (CME). A CME as seen on Saturday, October 9, 2021 from the Sun that directly faces Earth.

A massive solar flare straight in the direction of Earth is due to hit the atmosphere today, with warnings of power grid fluctuations as well as visibility of aurorae up to New York.
