Hydrogen powered Toyota Mirai sets Guinness World Record

The 2021 Toyota Mirai completed a 1360 km journey on a single, five-minute fill-up during a roundtrip tour of Southern California as it set a Guinness World Record for the longest distance covered by a FCEV without refueling.

The 2021 Toyota Mirai has set a Guinness World Record for the longest distance covered by a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle without refueling. Toyota’s hydrogen-powered Mirai covered 1360 km on a single, five-minute full fill during a roundtrip tour of Southern California. The record attempt, which took place over two days, was closely monitored by Guinness World Records. After 5 minutes of full filling, Mirai’s tank was sealed and validated by the officer at both the beginning and end of the journey. The 2021 Toyota Mirai was driven by professional hypermilers, with Wayne Gerds and Bob Winger co-piloting them.

The two-day tour began at the Toyota Technical Center (TTC) in Garda, California

The two-day journey began on August 23, 2021 at the Toyota Technical Center (TTC) in Gardena, California, which is home to Toyota’s fuel cell development group. On Day 1, FCEV traveled south to San Ysidro and then cruised north of Santa Barbara along the Pacific Coast Highway through Santa Monica and Malibu Beach. Both returned to the Toyota Technical Center (TTC) with 761 km logging by GPS.

Day 2 included more local driving loops, as the team pushed through 600 km of morning and afternoon rush hour traffic on the San Diego Freeway between Los Angeles and Orange County, as long as there was no one in the car. No hydrogen left and returned to TTC overall. 1360 km driven.

During its efficiency-focused journey, the company says the Mirai consumed a total of 5.65 kilograms of hydrogen and logged an impressive 152 mpg with water as its only emissions. In fact, the FCEV passed a total of 12 hydrogen stations with no refueling drive routes. In two days of testing, it emitted zero kilograms of CO2, whereas a vehicle with a standard internal combustion engine would have emitted about 300 kilograms of CO2 to cover the same distance.
