RANCHI: Unlike many private doctors who are taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to ward off patients, a general practitioner in Ranchi is offering free medical advice both online and offline to the victims.

Although Dr. Anil Kumar has been doing this for a long time, his free services started in a regular and organized manner after the outbreak of COVID-19. So far he has treated more than 3,000 patients online and offline free of cost.

Dr Kumar says that when Kovid-19 was at its peak and many doctors were staying away from patients, he thought of starting online treatment. He gave his phone number on social media and urged people to contact him anytime.

More than 500 people are directly connected to him through WhatsApp and are asking him for advice round the clock, for which nothing is charged. He also provides free service to those who inform him of his inability to pay.

He says he was inspired by his mother, who accused doctors of extorting huge sums of money from patients. “My WhatsApp group ‘Save Life Mission’ is for giving free medical advice,” says Dr. Kumar. “My mother wanted me to become a doctor and help the poor and needy with free medical advice and treatment.”

After passing out from Nalanda Medical College in Bihar in 1995, Dr. Kumar joined the Government of Gujarat. He returned to Ranchi in 2001 to join the Jharkhand government. He worked extensively in rural areas till 2005, after which he started doing private practice.

One of his patients, Vicky Kumar, says that Dr. Kumar is available online to chat with anyone, anytime. “Given the poor condition of medical facilities in government hospitals, he is like an angel to us,” Vicky said. In case of medical requirement for Lal Muni Mahto Dr. Kumar is the best option.
