In a shocking incident, a 14-year-old girl was married to Pakistani Maulana Salauddin Ayyub, leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F), and a member of the National Assembly (MNA) from Balochistan. The Pakistan Police has started an investigation into the marriage.
Citing local media, the Pak Observer has reported that the police have launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from an NGO working for the welfare of women in Chitral. According to a report by Dawn, the girl was a student of Government Girls High School, Jughur, where her date of birth was recorded on October 28, 2006, which revealed that she had not attained the age of marriage. Jugur is in the town of Chitral in North Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
According to Pakistan media, Maulana Salauddin Ayyubi, a member of the National Assembly, is in his late 50s. Inspector Sajjad Ahmad, SHO of Chitral police station, was quoted as saying that the police had reached the girl’s house a few days ago on the complaint of the organization, but her father had denied the girl’s marriage and had also given an affidavit to this effect.
The teenage girl’s marriage to a Pakistani MP, who is four times her age, comes despite the country’s law, which does not allow girls under 16 to get married and also recommends punishment for parents If they will.
According to the Pak Observer, the jurist has only confirmed the marriage with the girl while a proper marriage ceremony is yet to be held. Meanwhile, the Lower Chitral DPO has said that the girl’s father has assured the authorities that he will not send his daughter until he is 16 years old.
