LUCKNOW: Senior Congress leader and former Union minister Salman Khurshid on Sunday termed the October 3 violence at Lakhimpur Kheri as “tragic” and said it was not an ordinary crime as it was a “special harsh attitude” towards democratic protests. reason has been done.
He also said that “opportunity should not be seen in this tragedy”.
Eight people died in the violence and four of them were farmers, who were allegedly hit by a vehicle carrying BJP workers. Following this, angry farmers allegedly thrashed some people in their vehicles. The other dead include two BJP workers and their driver.
The farmers claimed that Union minister Ajay Mishra’s son Ashish was in one of the vehicles, with him and his father denying the allegation that they could produce evidence to prove that he was at an event at that time.
“The fact is that the attitude which led to the tragedy. It was not a common crime, it was a crime committed because of a special harsh attitude towards democratic protest,” Khurshid told PTI on Sunday.
“This attitude, if it continues, is going to be disastrous for many people in Indian democracy. I think it has to be fought vigorously,” he said.
He said that the symbol of resistance has become the protest of the farmers.
Farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, have been protesting and demanding their repeal since the implementation of three agricultural laws in September last year.
Asked how the Congress would counter the “Hindutva of the BJP”, Khurshid said, “Let me make it clear. It is a Hindu majority nation. Uttar Pradesh is a Hindu majority state. You honestly cannot believe that.” The head should not be the voice in deciding how the state is run.”
“There will be a voice in it. But the voice of the majority cannot completely negate the minority. It cannot happen,” he said.
The Congress leader, who is in Uttar Pradesh which is going to go to the assembly elections next year, also said that his party has a campaign on Hinduism.
“Our Hindu Dharma campaign is that Hinduism is inclusive, Hinduism is secular. And therefore Hinduism wants to join hands with other religions including Islam,” he said.
Khurshid said, “They say Hinduism is alone. We say Hinduism is with other religions. I am sure the state will decide in our favour.”
About the preparations of the Congress at the grassroots level to strengthen itself before the elections, he said that elections are also about the mood of the people.
He said, “As far as we have judged, the mood of the people is very unfavorable for the present BJP government (in Uttar Pradesh). I think their colossal failure during the COVID-19 pandemic cannot be forgotten. This It’s a very sensitive thing.” You don’t want to vote or campaign on the misery caused to the people by the inaction of the insensitive government.
“But, I believe there is a lot of restlessness and anger against this government. How will this anger come out in the election, which will ultimately be seen as an alternative that can defeat and replace the government, I think it all. Will become clear during the election dynamics,” Khurshid remarked.
When asked who is currently leading the Congress, he said, “Mrs. Sonia Gandhi is our President, Mr. Rahul Gandhi, Mrs. Priyanka Gandhi is our leader. Rahul Gandhi does not need to be the President to be a leader. He is a leader. You ask me questions about him, because he is a leader.”
The BJP attacks him because he is a leader, and he will continue to be the leader, the Congress leader said.
He said, “Once you accept someone as a leader, you should take their advice on what to do. I can’t tell my leader what you shouldn’t do. What my leaders say , I have to follow that.”
On who will be the face of the party in the upcoming 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Khurshid said, “When I said that Priyanka Gandhi is our leader, who will be the CM face, she will decide. Who am I to decide this, If she is our leader? She will decide.”
“We cannot contract her decisions and discretion. She is our leader, and she is free to say whatever she wants, and she will do it at the appropriate time,” he said.
Taking a jibe at political rivals, who say that both the Gandhi siblings are political tourists in Uttar Pradesh, the former state Congress chief said, if they (BJP) think they (Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi) will pose any challenge to them If not, they should do their own thing.
“Have these people (BJP) never done tourism? Somebody does spiritual tourism, some other kind of tourism. Have they never done tourism? Why are they so scared?” Khurshid asked.
On AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi joining politics in Uttar Pradesh, Khurshid said those who are being attracted towards Owaisi’s party should think whether he will be able to solve the country’s problems.
Asked which Congress will support if there is a hung assembly, SP or BSP, he said, “We are hoping for the best for Uttar Pradesh. We don’t want to compromise with the best, we don’t want to restrict the best.” We are here with optimism, confidence, dedication and commitment to go to the polls.”
