LUCKNOW: Politics has intensified over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence, in which several political leaders, including Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav, were taken into preventive custody by the UP Police on Monday while visiting the troubled district. .

Priyanka, who reached Lucknow at 8:30 pm on Sunday and tried to go to Lakhimpur with Deepender Hooda in the early hours of Monday, was detained in Sitapur, while the SP chief was arrested from in front of his residence in Lucknow.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was stopped in Sitapur in the early hours of Monday and taken to PAC Guest House. Priyanka questioned why the son accused of killing a Union minister was not arrested.

Talking to media persons, the Congress leader said, “If you can arrest us, then why not the minister’s son accused of murder.” He called it a “democratic, complete collapse of the legal process” in Uttar Pradesh, where the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government is in power.

State Congress leaders including UPCC chief Ajay Kumar Lallu and MLC Deepak Singh staged a protest in Sitapur demanding the release of the Congress general secretary.

Earlier, other Congress leaders including Pramod Tiwari, Salman Khurshid and others were put under house arrest with heavy police force deployment at their residences.

Similarly, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was arrested on Monday while sitting on a dharna outside his residence in Lucknow after he was not allowed to visit Lakhimpur Kheri on Monday.

He described the BJP government as worse than the British in suppressing the voice of the people in a democracy. “It was not seen and heard even under Hitler’s regime. This BJP government has left it behind in committing atrocities on farmers,” the SP chief said.

The Samajwadi Party alleged that Akhilesh Yadav was placed under house arrest late on Sunday night. However, there was a heavy presence of security forces outside Yadav’s residence in Lucknow.

Akhilesh Yadav was arrested along with his uncle and Rajya Sabha member Ram Gopal Yadav as SP workers agitated for not being allowed to go to Lakhimpur, torched a police vehicle in Lucknow, police took them to the police lines. have done.

Even Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party chief Shivpal Yadav – Lohia was detained during his visit to Lakhimpur Kheri. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh and BSP general secretary SC Mishra were also placed under house arrest for preventing them from going to Lakhimpur.

In view of the protest, the Lucknow administration imposed Section 144 of CrPC on Monday.

Awasthi informed the Lucknow airport authorities that Section 144 has been imposed in Lakhimpur Kheri and “requested them not to allow the arrival of Baghel and Randhawa”.

The Uttar Pradesh government has written to the Chief Secretary of Punjab, urging the state not to allow the travel to Lakhimpur Kheri.
