“He (Klopp) helped me. His teams and he helped me become a better manager. He put me on another level to think about it and prove myself… That’s why we’re still in this are in business,” Guardiola said.

“Some managers challenge you to go ahead. We did it in Germany… Here in England we’ve been together for many years. It’s good because both teams have the same idea – to score goals. They’re faster than us but We both try to win matches.”

Both managers have had their side off to a good start to the season, with second-placed City one point behind leaders Liverpool after six games.

“Winning at Anfield is important, but it’s difficult. Last season was the first time in many years. It’s the challenge… For us, it’s an honor to be rivals with Liverpool,” said Guardiola.

City, who suffered a 2-0 Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain in mid-week, may welcome Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden to the starting lineup after their substitute performances in Paris.

Ilke Gundogan and Oleksandr Zinchenko continue to be sidelined and are expected to return after their international break.

Guardiola said: “The way we played the last two games, it makes me very satisfied … I’m happy when we won the league but in this period when we’ve played with injuries and Foden and (Kevin) de Bruyne have just Have trained for two weeks, the level and consistency is very good.”

The Spaniard also backed Raheem Sterling, who has had a rough start to the season following the arrival of Jack Grealish, with the former Aston Villa midfielder preferring the left, once occupied by Sterling.

“Rahim played really well as a striker at PSG, creating incredible chances… If we need a player who can run right and left then Rahim is the best in the team. Depends how we want to attack and we need specific qualities,” Guardiola said.
