Maruti Suzuki reports two-fold fall in production in September due to semiconductor shortage

New Delhi: The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) last month saw a massive drop of more than two times in production due to shortage of semiconductor chips.

In a regulatory filing, the auto major produced a total of 81,278 units in September as compared to 1,66,086 units in September 2020.

“The company’s production volume in September 2021 was affected due to shortage of electronic components,” it noted.

MSI said the total passenger vehicle production last month stood at 77,782 units as against 1,61,668 units in September 2020.

Production of mini cars in the Alto and S-Presso models stood at 17,163 units last month, up from 30,492 units a year ago.

Similarly, manufacturing of compact cars including WagonR, Celerio, Ignis, Swift, Baleno and DZire declined from 90,924 units to 29,272 units, MSI said.

Production of utility vehicles – Gypsy, Ertiga, S-Cross, Vitara Brezza and XL6 – declined to 21,873 units last month from 26,648 units in the same month of 2020.

The company reported a decline in production of its Eeco van to 8,025 units last month as compared to 11,183 units in September 2020.

MSI said production of its light commercial vehicle Super Carry last month stood at 3,496 units as against 4,418 units in the year-ago month.

MSI had reported 8 per cent decline in total production in August at 1,13,937 units on a year-on-year basis.

On August 31, the auto major had announced that it expected total vehicle production in September at its plants in Haryana and Gujarat to be just 40 per cent of normal production due to semiconductor shortages.

The company has a production capacity of about 15 lakh units per annum at its Gurgaon and Manesar plants in Haryana.

In addition, Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG), a 100% subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan, has an additional installed production capacity of 7.5 lakh units per annum.

SMG exclusively supplies cars to MSI.

Semiconductors are silicon chips that fulfill control and memory functions in products ranging from automobiles, computers and cell phones to various other electronic items.

The use of semiconductors in the auto industry has increased globally in recent times as new models are coming with more and more electronic features such as Bluetooth connectivity and driver-assistance, navigation and hybrid-electric systems.
