American gymnastics star Simone Biles has been an icon on the Olympic stage and showed off her glamorous side at the Met Gala 2021 in New York on Monday (September 13) night. After headlines at the Tokyo Olympics by raising the issue of depression among top athletes, Biles looked stunning on the red carpet at the Met Gala in a dress designed by Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panczyk of Aria, in a three-in-one outfit. Includes a hand-embellished skirt covered with Swarovski crystals and weighs about 40kgs, a mini dress at the bottom and a dazzling black catsuit decorated to look like a starry night sky.
It was a great start for the superstar gymnasts, Aria and Athleta, who are all attending the event for the first time to celebrate the new performance of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”
Athleta’s brand partner Biles was in attendance as their guest. Working with stylist Leslie Framer, Athleta came into the field fresh from the Tokyo Olympics to create an ensemble for Biles.
“Well, you have your active brand, you have an athlete, and you have a hyper glamorous New York brand. Where do we all intersect? What is the common ground? And one word was performance,” Panszcic told Vogue. It was quoted as saying by.
The inspiration for the look ended up being the showgirls, specifically Josephine Baker. The skirt and dress are covered with crystals arranged to look like ostrich feathers.
Assembling the look was no easy task. According to Panszczyk, more than 100 people worked for 6,650 hours to embellish and prepare the three garments, ending at ‘around 4 p.m.’ on Sunday. The skirt, though it’s heavy, is actually padded, giving it a feel more similar to a weighted blanket than more crystal-covered armor.
Fogg and Panszczyk wanted Biles to be comfortable, so she could detach the skirt and remove the mini dress as night fell and she wanted to be more free to dance and move around.
