MS Dhoni’s double blow to CSK, Faf du Plessis and Sam Curran may miss out on Mumbai Indians

MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings will resume their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 campaign with a match against great rivals and defending champions Mumbai Indians. The two sides will face off in Dubai when IPL 2021 resumes on Sunday (September 19), however, Dhoni’s side has suffered a double blow with Faf du Plessis and Sam Curran unavailable for the game.

Du Plessis and Curran are the leading run-scorers and wicket-takers for CSK this season so far. The former South African batsman suffered a back injury while playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) a few days back.

Du Plessis was struggling to get fit in time for CSK’s opening match against Mumbai Indians on Sunday. CSK will miss the services of Sam Curran as their England all-rounder has landed in Dubai, which has been the base of the Super Kings, only on Wednesday (15 September).

CSK took to Twitter to provide the update and shared his picture from the team’s hotel. Even though he landed in the United Arab Emirates, Curran will not be available for the franchise’s first match against Mumbai Indians (MI). As per protocol, those coming from the UK will have to be in isolation for 6 days and Curren will now be in a hard quarantine. During this period he will undergo a COVID-19 test and will be allowed to come out of his room with all protocols in place.

Du Plessis has been in fine form in the CPL and is the third-highest run-scorer, but missed the last two matches for his franchise St Lucia Kings, including the semi-finals on Tuesday, due to injury. TOI reported that the opener has informed the CSK team management that a week’s rest can help him regain his fitness and he is taking all precautions to not aggravate the injury.

The South African batsman is currently third in the race for the Orange Cap with 320 runs from 7 matches, including four half-centuries and a top score of 95 not out.

“We are still not in a position to comment on the status of du Plessis’ availability until our medical team and physio (Tommy Simsek) investigate the extent of the injury. We can take a call after ascertaining the damages,” TOI quoted a CSK source as saying.

Du Plessis with other CSK members Imran Tahir and Dwayne Bravo Those playing in CPL will reach UAE on Thursday. All three need not undergo mandatory hard quarantine as they will be in bubble-to-bubble transfer.
