The Congress-led opposition Secular Democratic Alliance (SDA) on Monday called for a bandh in the Union Territory to condemn the “panic” of the State Election Commission in its civic election notification, scrapping reservations for backward classes and scheduled tribes. and demanded that the SEC be changed.
An urgent meeting of constituents of the SDA (Congress, DMK, VCK, Left parties and MDMK, among others) was held at the PCC office here last night, chaired by PCC President AV Subramanian, in which the resolution was passed, which took 6 am. Bandh was called from o’clock. at 6 pm.
The meeting strongly opposed the cancellation of reservation for BCs and SCs and the ‘roam’ of the SECs in the wards and offices of municipalities and commune panchayats.
The resolution states that the AINRC-BJP coalition government led by N Rangasamy is also responsible for the “confusion” of the SEC in holding the elections.
The meeting also demanded to replace the State Election Commissioner.
All the legislators and ministers in a joint meeting chaired by Speaker R Selvam on Saturday urged Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to intervene and rectify the “anomalies” made by the SEC and also wanted “appropriate” action against the commissioner.
The meeting had objected to the abolition of reservation in proposed elections for civic bodies for BCs and STs by the SEC through resolutions.
