GUWAHATI: Phanidhar Talukdar, who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Wednesday said the poverty of his constituency made him join the ruling government’s party in Assam.
Bhawanipur MLA Phanidhar Talukdar while talking to ANI said, “The people of my constituency are poor. How long will I be in the opposition and how will it benefit the people of my area? That’s why I joined the BJP.”
Explaining the reason for leaving the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), he said: “I left the AIUDF to work with the Chief Minister. There is no problem with the AIUDF, but I was hoping that they would be part of the government. “
Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed Phanidhar Talukdar to the BJP.
Sarma said, “The confidence of leaders across political spectrum in Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to grow. Glad to meet Hon’ble MLA of Bhawanipur Phanidhar Talukdar, who resigned from AIUDF and will join BJP later today. I am his family. I welcome you.”
The sitting AIUDF MLA from Badruddin Ajmal quit the party on Tuesday. He had contested the state assembly elections earlier this year on an AIUDF ticket.
