PL 2021-22: Southampton hold Manchester City to goalless draw; Sadio Mane breaks Liverpool’s record with 100th goal

Defending champions Manchester City were unable to convert key possession into goals as they were held to a goalless draw by Southampton in the Premier League (PL) on Saturday.

The home team took considerable control in the first half and came close to scoring through Ilke Gundogan and Raheem Sterling.

Southampton was awarded a penalty On 61 minutes, Kyle Walker was selected to foul Adam Armstrong, for which he was shown a red card.

However, both decisions were overturned after review by referee Jonathan Moss.

City thought they had a stoppage-time winner when Phil Foden’s saved header, his only shot on target in the entire match, was converted on a rebound by Sterling. But Sterling was found to be different from VAR.

The first draw from 31 league matches puts Man City in second place with 10 points, while Southampton, still awaiting their first win, are in 15th place with four points.

Sadio Mane breaks record as Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 3-0

Sadio Mane’s 100th Liverpool goal broke a Premier League (PL) record on Saturday as Senegal became the first player to score in nine consecutive top-flight matches against the same opponent.

The Liverpool forward’s scoring run against Crystal Palace began in August 2017. This took Mane one ahead of Robin van Persie, who found the net in eight consecutive PL matches against Stoke City.

Mane’s goal in a 3–0 win at Anfield against Crystal Palace was his 100th goal in all competitions for Liverpool. He became the 18th player in Reds history to score three figures for a goal – and the second in the current team after Mohamed Salah – on his 224th appearance.

Seventy-seven strikes from Mane’s Liverpool strike have come in the Premier League, with 22 earning the Golden Boot award during the 2018–19 season. The Senegal international has so far scored 19 times in the Champions League, twice in the FA Cup and two in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final.

Mane now has another milestone. Senegal is only two goals away from reaching a century in the Premier League, a feat achieved by teammate Mohamed Salah just last weekend.
