Saif: Sunil Chhetri’s late target helped India overtake Nepal

India got a much-needed relief in the form of Sunil Chhetri’s goal which enabled them to beat Nepal 1-0 to survive in the SAFF Championship. It was a whopping three points for India that brought back the Blue Tigers to make it to the finals. India had to work hard for this but Sunil Chhetri scored the winner after eight minutes of time. Chhetri missed an open goal in the first half but redeemed himself after scoring the winner in the 82nd minute when he converted a Farooq Choudhary header into the net.

With this, Igor Stimac’s team now has five points from three matches and has reached the third place in the table behind Nepal on six. India will now have to win their final round robin match to secure a place in the final.

Women beat Bahrain 5-0 in international friendly

The Indian women’s football team defeated lower-ranked Bahrain 5-0 in their international friendly here on Sunday.

Pyari Zaksa (19th and 68th minute) scored twice while Sangeeta Basfour (13th), Indumati 34th, Manisha (69th) scored the other goals.

However, the referee dismissed Pyari in the 73rd minute.

Bahrain is ranked 85th in the FIFA charts compared to India’s 57th position.

India had defeated UAE 4-1 in Dubai earlier this month in international friendly matches and lost 0-1 to Tunisia.

The team will take on Chinese Taipei, which is ranked 40th in the FIFA charts, here on Wednesday.

The friendly matches are part of preparations for the AFC Asian Cup, which will be hosted by India in January-February.

The Blue Tigress have not been able to win their last five matches this year, although all of them were against highly ranked European teams, before their victory against the 100th-ranked United Arab Emirates on 2 October.

This tour of four international friendly matches was the first under Thomas Dennerby’s leadership.
