Virat Kohli ready to step down from his role as captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) captain at the end of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season. Kohli, who will also step down from the captaincy of the Indian team in T20Is after the ICC T20 World Cup, will continue to play for RCB in the IPL. However, his decision means that RCB will now go looking for a new captain for the team. Veteran South African batsman AB de Villiers is being considered as one of the favorites for the role. The 37-year-old star has represented RCB for a decade and has established himself as a fan favorite.
However, according to former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar, de Villiers may not be the right choice to lead RCB due to his age.
“How many years are you going to be out of AB (de Villiers) as a captain and a player? So I would like to take someone who has at least three years.” Manjrekar told ESPN Cricinfo in a video discussion.
Suggesting three names for the role, Manjrekar said that RCB may look for their next captain from another franchise in the IPL auction. According to him, West Indies star Kieron Pollard could be the right choice.
Manjrekar said, “I know Pollard is no spring chicken, but he is someone who I think has leadership qualities. You should always look at a team person who has established leaders. So I I choose Pollard as a contender.” “Suriyakumar Yadav could be one of the auctions and David Warner is another,” he added of his remaining two options for the role.
