Scientists explain how Mars must have lost its atmosphere

Researchers believe the study has important implications for the discovery of habitable exoplanets

Simulations showed that in young Mars, the magnetosphere may have acted as a shield that prevents the solar wind from getting too close to the planet’s atmosphere and thus protects it.

Without an internal magnetosphere, the researchers said that the solar air magnetic field may have first wrapped around, and slipped past Mars, which takes away parts of the planet’s atmosphere, eventually erasing it completely gives. He said the findings confirm the belief that the magnetosphere around the planets plays an important role in determining their ability to sustain life.

Alternatively, planets that lose their magnetic fields eventually become ineffective with the loss of their atmosphere, the scientists said.

Researchers believe the study has important implications for the discovery of habitable exoplanets through initiatives such as NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and ISRO’s Exovaries Mission.
