Bambolim: Striker Esmail Gonclavas scored a brace to guide Chenayin FC to a 2–1 win over Odisha FC in an Indian Super League match here on Wednesday. This season the first clash between the two sides ended in a goalless draw. Goncalves scored in the 15th and 21st minutes for Chenkin before splashing in front of Diego Mauricio in the 64th minute to give Odisha some hope.
After struggling for goals all season, Csaba Laszlo’s men turned on the style against Odisha, scoring two in the opening quarters of the game. Portugal’s Forward Gonclave opened the scoring in the 15th minute, before scoring a penalty in the 21st minute to put Chennaiyin in two goals.
However, Mauritio reduced the margin after changing ends to keep Odisha in the hunt. But Chennaiyin captured the fort to secure the victory, which pushed them to fifth place in the standings.
After falling behind in Odisha’s defense, Gonçalves had a chance to put his team ahead in the fifth minute, but only to defeat goalkeeper Arshdeep Singh, he missed his chance.
However, he made amends for that 10 minutes with a tidy goal. Gaurav Bora failed to tackle a long ball from Rahim Ali and it fell to Gonclave, who did not make a mistake this time.
Chennaiyin doubled their lead six minutes later. Bora was again at fault, hacking Anirudh Thapa in the box. Gonçalves stepped in to take the spot-kick and sent Arshdeep the wrong way.
Chennaiyin defended well after Odisha struggled to gain a clear edge to take a comfortable lead. The closest he got in the first half was in the 37th minute when Manuel Onwu found the ball on his feet and a vision on goal, but he hit a four.
With some opening odds in the Odisha box, Chennaiyin team looked ready to score. However, Mauricio, who replaced Marcello Pereira at Halalassery, had other plans, as he made a stunning return for his team with a long-range curler.
Chennaiyin had a great opportunity when Lallinzuala Chongte hit a four off Thoi Singh after a brilliant run. However, the veteran, despite only defeating the keeper, failed to take his shot at the target.

Odisha almost took advantage of it in the 85th minute, when Daniel Lalahilimpia managed to take a shot from outside the box, but keeper Vishal Cath saved a superb diving. Odisha collapsed under pressure in the closing minutes but could not level up.
