Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Mohammad Azharuddin of Kerala praises Virender Sehwag after 37 balls Cricket news

Kerala batsman Mohammad Azharuddin played a stunning knock in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match in Mumbai on Wednesday as he helped Kerala win their second match on the trophy. Chasing 197, the right-handed opener hit a century on just 37 balls against Mumbai bowling, including the likes of Dhawal Kulkarni, Tusshar Deshpande and Shams Mulani, as Kerala won the match in four overs. Azharuddin remained unbeaten on 137 off 54 balls as Kerala beat Mumbai by eight wickets. It was the second fastest century in the history of India’s national T20 century after Rishabh Pant’s 32-ball ton in 2018.

Former India batsman Virender Sehwag was impressed with Azharuddin’s fiery innings. He said, “Wow Azharuddin! Something similar had to be tried against Mumbai. A score of 137 * 54 and finishing work on hand. Enjoyed this innings.”

It was the first century made by a Kerala batsman in T20 and the third fastest century by an Indian in the shortest format.

Here’s 26-year-old Tejashwi’s attempt:

Azharuddin hit 11 sixes and nine fours in his thrilling innings.

Earlier, Kerala won the toss and opted for fielding. The top three of Mumbai’s Aditya stars, Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Suryakumar Yadav, scored 42, 40 and 38 respectively, but the middle order failed to fire. However, Shivam Dubey’s innings of 26 off 13 balls helped him finish at 196/7.

Coming into the chase, Azharuddin served as Mumbai bowlers, with solid support from opening partner Robin Uthappa. Both scored 129 runs before Uthappa went for 33 runs in the 10th over.

Sanju Samson smashed Mumbai bowlers as soon as he came, scoring 22 runs off 12 balls and scoring only 7 runs before he was required to win. But for Mumbai, the wicket was only a consolation as Azharuddin hit a six off Siddhesh Lad to seal Kerala’s victory and bring the match to a close.
