Saharanpur: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav slammed Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government over the Lakhimpur Kheri incident and congratulated farmers for not backing down from their agitation despite being humiliated by the BJP.
Speaking at a rally in Saharanpur, Yadav said, “We saw the work of people in power. We saw their action in Lakhimpur Kheri. Farmers were crushed by vehicles. Laws were also ready to be crushed. Those who could cut grass. There are farmers below and the law can also crush the Constitution.”
“Farmers are our ‘Annadata’. They are facing humiliation today. Farmers are being called ‘Mawali’. They (Uttar Pradesh government) call them terrorists. I want to congratulate the farmers for taking their steps. Did not back down. His agitation even after being humiliated by the BJP several times,” Yadav said.
Eight people, including four farmers, were killed in the violence on October 3. UP Police has so far arrested three people including Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni.
This comes ahead of the 2022 assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh.
In the 2017 assembly elections, the BJP returned to power in the state. The BJP has 309 MLAs, SP 49, BSP 18 and Congress 7 in the 403-member Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
