UP: Four killed, many injured in explosion at illegal firecracker factory


Muzaffarnagar: Four people were killed and several others injured in a blast at an illegal firecracker factory in Shamli district on Friday evening.

Shamli District Magistrate (DM) Jasjit Kaur said the factory is located in Kairana town and 10 workers were present in the premises at the time of the blast.

Four of them died, while several were injured and two narrowly escaped, he said, adding that the injured were taken to a medical college in Meerut.

However, police had earlier said that 10 people were injured in the blast.

The DM said that immediately after the blast, local people and police reached the spot and started search and rescue operation.

He said digging machines would have to be used to remove the debris.

The deceased have been identified as Pappi from Baghpat and Salman, Famuddin and Ruman from Bahraich, officials said.

The District Magistrate said that an inquiry has been ordered.

Officials said the factory used to make pickles earlier and was closed for some time.
