GUWAHATI: On a day when Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu was in Shillong on an official visit, militants planted a bomb at the entrance of the National People’s Party, which leads Meghalaya’s ruling coalition.

The 2 kg Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was used by the banned Hinwtrap National Liberation Council (HNLC) to protest the killing of its former general secretary, Cheristerfield Thangkhu.

Hiding the IED in a bag was noticed by a passerby. Later the police disabled it.

Thangkhiv was gunned down by the police at his Shillong residence on August 13 in an alleged fake encounter. His house was raided by the police in connection with an IED blast in the popular tourist hill station.

His murder had given rise to sporadic incidents of arson and sabotage.
