The Dahanu-Andheri local train was approaching Vasai Road railway station when Police Naik Eknath Naik, who was patrolling platform number one. 5, saw the woman standing in the middle of the tracks. A police spokesman said some policemen at a nearby rail over-bridge also alerted Mr. Naik.
Shri Naik immediately signaled the motorman to stop the train. He then ran towards the spot and pulled the woman to the platform in time, while the train stopped near him, the officer said.
Two constables of Railway Protection Force (RPF) also rushed to help the policeman.
A police spokesperson said that when questioned, the woman identified herself as Subhadra Shinde, who lived alone in Palghar’s Vasai area, adding, “She was mentally disturbed.”
Senior police officers commended Mr. Naik for his courageous act.
The policeman later told reporters that he was happy that he could save the woman’s life, and thanked his colleagues and RPF personnel for their support.
