Azamgarh (UP):

A woman committed suicide by consuming poison here today over alleged inaction on a rape complaint. While his family has said that he had consumed poison at the local police station, the authorities denied it.

However, the police have registered a case of rape by suspending the SHO of the police station on charges of negligence.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav demanded strict action against the culprits, saying that the incident was a slap on the face of the BJP government in the state.

SP Sudhir Kumar Singh said the woman’s husband has alleged that she was raped recently and had identified Anil as an accused, but the police failed to act.

Her husband said that he committed suicide in the police station but the SP denied it.

The SP, however, said that the SHO of the local police station has been suspended for negligence and a case of rape has been registered.

The woman’s family alleges that they approached the police several times for justice, but to no avail. He told that the woman reached the police station on Saturday and consumed poison.

The SP said that he was taken to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. He said that the body has been sent for post-mortem.

Samajwadi Party President and Azamgarh MP Akhilesh Yadav has targeted the BJP government over the incident. In a tweet, he said, “In Azamgarh, hurt by the lack of action against a rape accused, a woman commits suicide at the police station – very sad!”

Akhilesh Yadav said, “This incident is a slap on the face of the BJP government, which makes a tall claim of providing justice to the common man. The government should take strict action against the guilty police officers and the accused.”
